New look Studio tins!

As part of its ongoing rebranding programme Derwent is delighted to announce the launch of a stunning new presentation for its range of Studio Pencils.

As part of its ongoing rebranding programme Derwent is delighted to announce the launch of a stunning new presentation for its range of Studio Pencils.

Originally developed in 1980 the Derwent Studio Pencil has the same lead as the popular Derwent Artists Pencil but its slim hexagonal barrel makes it easier to grip and this coupled with its narrow 3.4mm lead gives the artist a greater degree of control and precision. This means that the Studio Pencil is particularly suited to detailed illustrations, such as botanical studies, architectural drawings and graphic design. All these disciplines tend to be studio-based hence the name!

Derwent commissioned Irina Garmashova, who trained at the St Petersburg Fine Art Academy and is a member of the UK Coloured Pencil Society, to draw the image for the new tins. ‘We wanted a drawing that highlighted the qualities of the Studio Pencil – precision, control and a wide range of colours’ said Leah Lister, Derwent Marketing Manager. ‘Irina enjoys creating strong and bold still-life and she used all 72 colours in the Studio range to draw this impactful and colourful image of stones underwater.’

‘I really enjoyed this commission’ said Irina. The hexagonal shape of Derwent Studio Pencils made them a pleasure to hold and work with. I was able to produce very fine lines but they carried the same intensity of colour usually associated with broader pencils. I also found the Studio Pencils very easy to combine with blending medium to create a wide variety of textures and there is a very good range of colours which combine to create every shade imaginable’.

Customers will start to see the new look 24 and 36 tins in stores now. New look 12 and 72 tins will be in store from March / April 2011.
