Pastel is one of the most traditional forms of drawing; Leonardo da Vinci first mentioned it in 1495! And, pastels are synonymous with portraits. The new Derwent Skintones assortment brings the medium right up to date featuring, as it does, the Derwent Pastel Pencil – a pastel encased in wood. They have a soft powdery texture which produces a smooth velvety finish ideal for blending, particularly useful when trying to create an even skin tone. They sharpen easily and because they are pencils they are clean and easy to control.

To ensure the colour palette of their new Pastel Pencil Skintones was absolutely perfect Derwent approached Carole Massey, a professional artist and tutor who has gained a reputation as a portrait artist, to select her favourite 12 shades of Pastel Pencil for drawing people from different nations. She then used this assortment to create 3 step by step tutorials, an elderly gentleman, a small child and a young lady. All designed to demonstrate how you can use this selection to achieve a wide range of skintones and textures. The tutorials are free to download from the Derwent web site www.pencils.co.uk.

The new Derwent Pastel Pencil Skintones is available in an assortment of 12 presented in a sturdy storage tin featuring the 3 new pastel portraits created exclusively for Derwent by Carole Massey.
